The plot of the film covers the period of the Caucasian war, which was waged with the Russian troops in the middle of the 19th century by the unifier of the highlanders, Imam Shamil. His son Jamaluddin in 1839 was extradited by his father to Russia as an amanat - as the hostages were called in those days. But, despite this, Imam Shamil continued armed struggle with Russian troops in the Caucasus.
